Case Files

Examples of Completed Data Detective Work

Each case file is meant to provide a picture of what a data detective could do. While they may not all be structured in the same way, we hope what is clear is that data intuition borne through sophisticated and rigorous data science techniques can provide meaningful impact. Moreover, these case files showcase such opportunity through data detectives who are at various places in their journey, collectively showing that a little guidance and experience can go a long way.

How Cash App is Fighting Scams

Richard Lu

As a rare example of a public summary on private work, this case file demonstrates some of the end results of data detective work within a larger company. Scams are a complex phenomenon, often involving consumer deception, organization of fraud, and various technological mediums. Data detective work with proprietary data has the potential to push the industry towards better solutions.

Forecasting Page Views to Measure Engagement

Elaine Guo '24

In this project, Elaine uses Meta's Prophet model to forecast the number of page views we can expect on a website, given historical data. This is an important metric, as an accurate model in this domain can help inform future growth, engagement, and revenue (e.g. click-through-rates). Moreover, the framework could be used to extrapolate the trajectories of certain page features or topics, providing input into strategic design as creators build out a web presence.
